Good reasons to become a member and obtain a certification

The MIBB society aims to promote minimal invasive biopsy methods in Switzerland by reassuring and maintaining high quality  in all swiss institutions which perform breast biopsies.

We  aim to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and promote evidence-based education, research and the development of standards and guidelines. Certification and quality validation programs aim to establish a qualitative breast biopsy standard for all members.

 

 

 


The benefits and obligations of being a MIBB member

MIBB members are eligible to:
  • Receive and maintain theMIBB institution and individual operator certification
  • Contribute to biopsy data collection and consensus conferences based on this data
  • Receive the latest information about current MIBB research
  • Contribute to a large interdisciplinary network in breast cancer care in Switzerland
  • Present and discuss your experiences, your vision and projects in yearly conventions
By joining the MIBB society, institutions and operators agree to fulfil the following conditions:
  • To maintain the certification the following number of cases is required annually:
  • 20 VAB interventions in the institution
  • 12 VAB interventions by the certificated physician
  • Agreement to adhere to the quality assurance measures by entering all vacuum-assisted-biopsies (VAB) into the MIBB-database (www.adjumed.net/mibb/)
  • Able to pay the annual certification costs based on the number of VABs entered into the database.

Overview of accreditation and annual fees (per case)

 

Minimum charge per year  CHF 500.- (reflects the 20 VAB to be performed each year to meet the requirements of quality)
High performance institutions receive a discounts of the processing fees:

  • from 50 cases up a 5% discount
  • from 100 cases up a 10 % discount
  • from 200 cases up a 15% discount

Certification of beginners

Requirements for a «Beginner»

“Beginner” is defined as any physician

  • who is starting to learn how to perform minimal invasive breast biopsies
  • physicians with low experience are considered those who do not reach 12 VABs per year

Application process:

  • Member of the SGS applied or confirmed (SGS membership application)
  • MIBB-certification course applied of confirmed (MIBB courses)
  • Confirmation of 5 VABs  performed under supervision and individually performed. Submit confirmation template (RIS documentation) or confirmation by supervisor which includes the number of biopsies and the corresponding time period to mibb@adjumed.ch

Requirements to be fulfilled after initial certification:

  • Performance of at least 12 VABs per year
  • Entering all data of VAB cases into the Adjumed database

Note:
If the institution of the applicant is not accredited by MIBB, the institute certification  needs to be  completed first. After successful accreditation of the institution the individual can apply for a MIBB certification as described above.

Costs:
When you are a member of the already registered institution, there will be no additional fee for yourself.    The institution will be charged annually for the registration and processing of the data inserted in the mibb data base (see „membership and accreditation fees“)

Certification of experts

Requirements of an «Expert» associate for individual MIBB-certification
  • „Expert“ is defined as any physician who performed more than 12 VABs annually within the last 2 years.

Application process:

  • You are an expert (def see above) and start an activity in a MIBB-accredited institution in Switzerland
  • Member of the SGS applied or confirmed (SGS membership application)
  • Participation of the MIBB-certification course to refresh the knowledge of breast interventions if you come from abroad or ask for documentary for MIBB regulations (see page guidelines)
  • MIBB-certification course confirmed (please attach)
  • Confirmation of minimum 12 VAB independently performed. Submit confirmation template (RIS documentation) which includes the number of biopsies for each guidance method (DBT, MRI and/or US) and the corresponding time period
  • Fill in the online expert application form (click here)

Requirements to be fulfilled after initial certification:

    • Performance of at least 12 VABs per year
    • Entering all data of VAB cases into the Adjumed database

Certification of an institute

MIBB-certification of institutions performing VABs

For an institution that plans to introduce the performance of VABs, the accreditation of the institute is necessary to guarantee quality standards. Individual physicians can only obtain their certification, if the institution at which they are associated,  is accredited.

Requirements of institutions for initial MIBB-certification
  • Present a responsible physician for VAB in this institute
  • The responsible physician must present prove of sufficient experience in the first year of activity
  • Collaboration with a pathology institute, which applies Swiss pathology society guidelines.
  • Adequate state of the art equipment to perform the VABs:
    • Mammographic-guided VABs: Dedicated stereotactic-guided and/or tomosynthesis-guided biopsy and compression device
    • MRI guided VABs: Dedicated MRI-compatible biopsy and fixation device. Use of high-field MRI (1.5T or 3T magnet) and dedicated breast coil
    • Ultrasound guided VABs: Availability of dedicated breast ultrasound machine with high resolution probes (> 12.5 mHz)
    • Vacuum biopsy device with needle size < 12 G and sufficient vacuum aspiration power
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration (networking and conferences)

Requirements to be fulfilled by the institution after initial certification
  • Performance of at least 20 minimal invasive breast biopsies per year at the certified institution
  • Performance of at least 12 minimal invasive breast biopsies per year by each certified physician
  • Entering all data of  VAB cases into the Adjumed-Database fulfills the mandatory participation at the MIBB working group quality assurance program
  • Annual payment of the data processing fees at adjumed.
